Junior Beach Volleyball in Ipswich
To kick off 2017's outdoor season, Andrew Whitefield will be running a Beach Volleyball all-dayer for junior players on the sand court at The Copleston Centre in Ipswich on Sunday the 4th of June.
This will be aimed at those who have been enjoying indoor volleyball and want to learn how to maximise their potential on the beach!
At Copleston we're lucky to have a well sheltered court which usually provides ideal conditions during the day. However, sometimes, weather conditions can mean that beach volleyball in England tests resiliance and competitions continue regardless. To prepare for this, this session will run whatever the weather so check the forecast before setting out and dress appropriately.
The session will run from 9am-3pm. Participants should bring a packed lunch, snacks and at least four litres of water.
The venue is near the hospital in Ipswich, to the east of the town centre. The entrance to the Copleston Centre sports facilities is on Foxhall Road, roughly opposite the former St Clements Hospital, next to the St Elizabeth Hospice. The address is the Copleston Centre, 553 Foxhall Road, Ipswich, IP3 8LR.
The day will be open to a maximum of eight participants to ensure that everyone gets a decent amount of time on the court. The cost will be £10 per participant, or £15 for two from the same family. Participants will be accepted on a first-paid, first-guaranteed basis. In order to secure your place(s), please complete the registration form and make your payment using the following details ASAP:

Thurston and Castle Manor win U17 Suffolk School Games volleyball
On Thursday the 8th of December, St Alban's Catholic High School hosted the U17s Suffolk School Games volleyball county finals.
In the girls competition, Castle Manor, Thurston and St Benedict's played each other twice, with Castle Manor and Thurston each securing three wins, including victories against each other. St Benedict's had come close to upsetting Thurston, with a 21-19 result, but went away with the bronze medals having earns the right to compete via October's western area heat. In the final, Thurston beat Castle Manor 25-18 to earn the gold medals.
Four teams contested the boys competition. In their final group stage match, King Edward VI had a 20-19 lead over Castle Manor, but Castle Manor recovered to scrape a 21-20 win to finish top with three wins. King Edward then had to wait for the result of the final group stage match to learn their destiny; they were tied with St Benedict's on wins and therefore needed a Claydon win to give them a chance of qualifying for the final via points difference. St Benedict's took a good lead early on and it looked like they would qualify for the final, but Claydon came back to win 21-20. Despite this great comeback, Claydon's earlier 21-11 loss to Castle Manor meant that their points difference was not good enough to earn them a medal. King Edward's points difference was the best of the tied teams so they qualified for the final whilst St Benedict's went home with the bronze medals. Castle Manor took control of the final and went on to win 15-12 to earn the gold medals.
The next level of School Games competition involves attending trials for the regional squads. It's hoped that some of the students who competed in these tournaments will take this step. Meanwhile, a number of the players are already training with community clubs around the county alongside adult players. It is hoped that more will continue their volleyball in this way. Details of all of the clubs around the county can be found at www.suffolkvolleyball.org.uk/clubs.
Thurston and King Edward VI win Suffolk School Games U15 volleyball
St Alban's Catholic High School in Ipswich hosted the county-finals for the under-15s volleyball in the Suffolk School Games on Tuesday the 6th of December.
Six teams competed in the girls competition, with Copleston winning Group 1, having beaten County Upper 21-14 and Thurston 21-17. Meanwhile, Claydon headed Group 2 having beaten St Benedict's 21-11 and Farlingaye 21-12. However, when the groups crossed-over, it was the teams who had finished second who prevailed in the semi-finals; Thurston beating Claydon 25-15 and Farlingaye beating Copleston 25-14. Copleston went on to claim the bronze medals. Thurston built an early lead in the final. Farlingaye launched a come-back but Thurston held their nerve to claim the gold medals 25-23.
The boys competition was contested by four teams. King Edward VI won all three matches in the group stage, the closest being against Thurston, 21-17. Thurston beat Copleston 21-13 to earn their place in the final. Copleston's 21-18 victory over Claydon earns them the bronze medals. The final saw King Edward VI continue their dominance, winning 25-18 to earn the gold medals.
The next level of School Games competition involves attending trials for the regional squads. It's hoped that some of the students who competed in these tournaments will take this step. Meanwhile, a number of the players are already training with community clubs around the county alongside adult players. It is hoped that more will continue their volleyball in this way. Copleston and Farlingaye win U15 Southern Area School Games Heats
St Alban's Catholic High School in Ipswich hosted the Southern Area Heat of the Suffolk School Games U15 Volleyball competition on Wednesday the 30th of November. Teams were competing to secure places in the County Finals which will be held in December.
Five teams competed in the girls competition. After the round-robin, Claydon, Copleston and Farlingaye 2 were tied with two wins each whilst Farlingaye 1 had won all four matches to secure their place in the final. It was Copleston with the superior points difference of the teams with two wins each who joined Farlingaye 1 in the final. With three teams qualifying for the County Finals, Claydon and Farlingaye 2 therefore competed in the 3rd place play-off for the last spot. The round-robin match between the two was close with Claydon edging it 15-14, but they were more emphatic in this deciding match, winning 25-16 to qualify for the next round. Meanwhile, in the heat's final a close match was in progress. Farlingaye 1 had beat Copleston comfortably in the round-robin, but it was much closer this time round, finishing 25-23 to Farlingaye.
In the boys competition, four teams competed. As with the girls competition, three teams were tied on two wins each after the round-robin stage. Points difference determined that Copleston automatically qualified for the final, leaving Claydon 1 and Claydon two to battle for the remaining place. Claydon 1 showed they had the right to the “1” label with a 25-15 victory.
The qualifying teams are now looking forward to the County Finals on Tuesday the 6th of December. Following that, clubs around the county will be welcoming the students to allow them to continue to develop their skills and improve their game.
Thurston and Castle Manor win U17 Western Area School Games Heats
On Tuesday the 1st of November, County Upper School in Bury St Edmunds hosted the Suffolk School Games Western Area U17 Volleyball Heats. Over 50 students from five different schools were involved.
In the boy's competition, the six teams formed two groups in the round-robin stage. King Edward VI won both of their matches to top Group 2. Group 1 was a much closer affair, with County Upper, Castle Manor and St Benedict's 2 winning one match each. St Benedict's 2 topped the group on points difference. The top two from each group then played in the semi-finals. Castle Manor had a convincing win over King Edward VI whilst St Benedict's 2 edged out Thurston 25-23. Castle Manor followed up their semi-final win with another convincing win, 15-8 to claim the title. With the top three teams qualifying for the county finals, the third and fourth placed play-off between King Edward VI and Thurston would be decisive. King Edward VI came out on top, 25-21 to claim the final qualifying spot.
With five teams in the girls competition, each team played all of the others. There were a number of close matches, with Castle Manor 1 and Castle Manor 2 each winning two matches and finishing with identical points difference. They were therefore separated by the result when they played each other. Castle Manor 1 had won that, so they claimed third position and a place in the county finals. Thurston and St Benedict's 1 had each won three matches, St Benedict's 1 winning their group-stage encounter 25-23 in the first match of the afternoon. However, Thurston had topped the table with a superior points difference. The two teams met again in the final. In the group stage, to ensure matches could follow-on one after another the “must win be two” rule was not in operation, however for the decisive final, it was implemented. Thurston, not having taken in the change, reached 15-14 and thought they had won. St Benedict's 1 appealed. This was upheld. When the teams returned to the court, St Benedict's 1 took the lead, but Thurston regained their composure to claim the victory 18-15.
The qualifying teams now go through to the county finals which will be held on Thursday the 8th of December at St Alban's High School in Ipswich.
Following the event, local volleyball veteran and King Edward VI coach, Mr Evans, commented: “It was great to see so many youngsters playing volleyball”. This was followed by Suffolk Volleyball Association Chairman, Andrew Whitefield agreeing and adding: “Hopefully we'll be seeing many of these people get involved with our local clubs”.
The local clubs Bury Bobcats, Haverhill Hornets, Stowmarket Volleyball Club and Stow Stingers are all be eager to welcome new players along. Details about all of the clubs can be found at www.suffolkvolleyball.org.uk.

Farlingaye and Castle Manor win U17s School Games
Thursday the 10th of December saw the county finals of the U17 Suffolk School Games volleyball competitions held at St Alban's High School in Ipswich. Over 50 players took part across two competitions each of which featured five teams playing in an initial round-robin stage followed by the top two qualifying for the final.
In the girls competition group satge St Alban's finished fifth. It was close for third and fourth with Thurston narrowly lost 27-25 to Alexanders to miss out on a place in the final, leaving them and County Upper each winning two games. Their positions were decided by the result between the two which Thurston had won 25-18. Alexanders and Castle Manor were the top two, each having won three of their games. Castle Manor had overcome Alexanders 25-20 in the group stage, but lost to County Upper. Castle Manor opened up a big lead before Alexanders got back into the match, taking it 25-15 to claim the 2015 title.
Thurston finished fifth in the group stage of the boys competition. With one win, St Benedict's finished fourth. Alexanders were third with two wins. Castle Manor won all four, including a 25-22 win over Farlingaye who won their other three group stage matches. When the two teams met in the final, it was a close affair, with Castle Manor ahead for much of the match. However, as the match reached its climax Farligaye took control to win 25-23.
Some great rallies were seen in some really close matches and it's clear that the standard of volleyball in Suffolk's schools is improving. It's hoped that many of the players seen in action will now filter through into the county's community clubs. There's also one more opportunity for them to compete before Christmas as Stowmarket Volleyball Club host an enter-as-a-player tournament at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre on Sunday the 20th of December. Full details can be found via suffolkvolleyball.org.uk/calendar.
The Suffolk Volleyball Association would like to thank St Alban's High School for hosting and the schools' teachers and coaches for preparing and bringing their teams. They'd also like to thank the volunteers from Ipswich Ravens VC, Bury Bobcats VC and Stowmarket VC for helping ensure the event went well.
Alexanders and Castle Manor win U15s School Games
Tuesday the 8th of December saw the county finals of the U15 Suffolk School Games volleyball competitions held at St Alban's High School in Ipswich. Around 60 players took part across two competitions.
The girls competition saw five teams play in an initial round-robin stage. County Upper finished fifth. It was close for third and fourth with Alexanders and St Alban's each winning two games, so their positions were decided by the result between the two. This was a very tight 26-24 in the first match of the tournament which Alexanders had edged. The top two qualified for the final: Thurston and Castle Manor, each having won three of their games. Thurston had overcome Castle Manor 25-16 in the group stage, but lost to St Alban's. The final was a different affair, with Castle Manor taking it 25-11 to claim the 2015 title.
The boys competition featured six teams. These were divided into two groups of three. Castle Manor topped Group A, followed by Alexanders and King Edward VI A. Claydon topped Group B, followed by St Benedict's and King Edward VI B. The group stage was followed by cross-over semi-finals and a 5th/6th place play off. Although King Edward VI's B team (Year 9) had finished ahead of their A team (Year 10) in their area heat, the A team achieved revenge with a 25-19 win. Castle Manor overcame St Benedict's in the first semi-final, 25-10. Alexanders overcame Claydon 25-21 to earn a re-match against Castle Manor to whom they had lost in the group stage. The final was neck-and-neck as the scores reached the 20s. Alexanders then opened up a gap and avenged their earlier defeat against Castle Manor by winning 25-21. St Benedict's beat Claydon 25-23 in the third-place play-off.
Some great rallies were seen in some really close matches and it's clear that the standard of volleyball in Suffolk's schools is improving. It's hoped that many of the players seen in action will now filter through into the county's community clubs.
The Suffolk Volleyball Association would like to thank St Alban's High School for hosting, the schools' teachers and coaches for preparing and bringing their teams. They'd also like to thank the volunteers from Ipswich Ravens VC, Ipswich VC, Bury Bobcats VC and Stowmarket VC for helping ensure the event went well. They now look forward to the U17s finals on Thursday the 10th of December.
[The original version of this article, credited County Upper instead of Castle Manor for winning the girls competition. This has now been corrected and the SVA would like to appologise for this error.]

Amelia's England Earn Silver
Thurston Community College student, Amelia Hadjianastasi earned her first call-up to the England Juniors Volleyball Squad for the Sainsbury's School Games which were held in Manchester from the 4th - 6th of September. The first two days comprised of a group stage in which England Juniors played five matches. Amelia, who trains with Bury Bobcats VC and is part of Volleyball England's satellite academy at The Boswells School in Chelmsford, featured heavily in these matches as England Juniors went unbeaten to earn a place in Sunday's final against Scotland West.
Scotland West took an early 4 point lead in the first set. They extended this to 7 before England got back to within three at 14-17. Scotland West re-opened a five-point lead at 15-20 which England clawed back to three at 17-20. The teams traded points to 19-22. Scotland earned four set points at 24-20, England saved won, but Scotland West took the next to take the first set 25-21.
A deceptive roll-shot from Hadjianastasi got England level at 3-3 in the second set before she was part of the block that gave them the lead at 4-3. England extended the lead to 11-5 before further increasing it to 15-8. Scotland West clawed it back to 15-10, but England re-gained the seven-point lead before extending it to eight at 18-10. Amelia rotated back-court at 19-11 and started by serving an ace. Another strong server forced a poor pass from Scotland and England were able to take advantage. Amelia's run of winning serves extended to four to reach set-point at 24-11, but she served long. It wasn't long, however, before England clinched the set at 25-14.
In the deciding first-to-fifteen set, England took the lead at 4-2, but Scotland West recovered to lead 4-5 before extending their lead to 6-8 at the change of ends. Good cover from Hadjianastasi allowed England to set up a winning attack to get it back to 7-8. England's recovery continued as they took the lead at 9-8 before Scotland bounced back to take a two-point lead at 11-9 which they extended to give them three championship points at 14-11. Scotland West served out on the first, but they successfully received the next to take the set 15-11 and claim the championship.

Following an invitation to attend Volleyball England's National Squads Camp in Kettering over the weekend of the 14th and 15th of March and having impressed the coaches over a full training programme, Amelia Hadjianastasi received the news that she has been selected for the next England training camp from the 3rd to 6th of April.
Amelia now hopes to be part of the squad playing in the Sainsbury's School Games, where England will compete against Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales in September.
Amelia, the daughter of a local mother and Cypriot father was born in Cyprus and lived there for her first 14 years before moving to Suffolk. It was in Cyprus that her love of volleyball developed thanks to her father's encouragement and the popularity of the sport there. The family returned to Suffolk in 2013, when Amelia's family made contact with Andrew Whitefield who was working to increase opportunities to play volleyball throughout Suffolk. Amelia was able to continue to play at the newly-formed Bury Bobcats VC where she has benefited from high quality coaching.
After hearing of her seleciton, Amelia said: "This is such an exciting journey to be on, there is such a lot of talent at the national camps and I feel privileged to be part of it."

One great year for volleyball in Suffolk, another one on its way!
2013 has been a great year for volleyball in Suffolk. In the summer the Suffolk Volleyball Association were awarded a £10,000 Sport England grant to develop the sport across the county. This was combined with funding from a number of other sources to support an ambitious development project. The project has seen the establishment of volleyball within the Suffolk School Games and the successful launch of the new Bury Bobcats Volleyball Club. There are further developments to look forward to in 2014 with the imminent launch of new clubs in Haverhill and North-East Ipswich and the development of outdoor volleyball in the Spring term at a number of schools around the county.
Meanwhile, the established clubs are also performing well with Newmarket sitting in second place in the National League Division M3C, Stowmarket unbeaten in the men's Eastern Region Series and the Suffolk Indoor Series is proving more popular than ever.
New posts and nets have been installed in the sports halls at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre and Stowmarket's Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre that allow nets to be run down the length of the sports halls to allow the clubs to take on more members. The Sunday 3-4:30pm session in Bury and 6-8pm session in Stowmarket are open to adults and teens from beginners to experienced players. Sessions are fun with lots of games as are Ipswich VC's Wednesday 8-10pm sessions at Maidenhall Sports Centre and Stow Stingers' Tuesday 7-9pm sessions at Stowupland High School.
Castle Manor Academy in Haverhill and St Albans High School in Ipswich are two more venues that are benefitting from long nets allowing play on multiple courts simultaneously and these will be the venues for two new clubs both launching at the start of January as part of Volleyball England's nationwide Go Spike campaign with backing from Suffolk Sport and Sportivate, the £10 million per year Lottery funded Sport England Olympic legacy project.
The club in Haverhill will start on the 8th of January and run on Wednesday evenings from 6-7:30pm whilst Ipswich Ravens which will be based at St Albans High School, close to Ipswich hospital, will start on the 11th of January and run on Saturday afternoons from 2-4pm. New members, including beginners are welcome at all of the venues listed every week.

Logo Design Competitions
The new clubs that are launching will each need a logo. Therefore, we're running competitions to design one for each:
- Haverhill VC
- Ipswich Ravens VC
The designers of each winning logo will win a Mikasa Go Spike volleyball!
The logo can be designed using any software or handdrawn - we have a professional graphics illustrator who will then convert it into a format that can be scaled from a tiny logo to be used on Twitter to something massive for banners!
The closing dates for the Haverhill and Ipswich Ravens competitions will be early in 2014.
GB Beach Volleyball Player to Launch Bury St Edmunds Volleyball Club
Hundreds of thousands more young people are to benefit from the sporting legacy following the London 2012 Games, after Sport England recently announced an extra £24 million to expand and extend its successful Sportivate programme.
The National Lottery funding means Sportivate can continue helping 14- to 25-year-olds to get involved in sports from judo and tennis to wakeboarding and parkour until 2017.
New figures published in April 2013 show that almost 190,000 teenagers and young adults have so far benefitted from free or discounted six-to-eight week sports coaching courses through Sportivate. Of these, 156,547 have successfully completed their course, missing no more than one session.
To help inspire and motivate these Sportivate participants, Sport England's Sporting Champions team of current and retired elite athletes, many of whom competed at London 2012 - will visit Sportivate sessions to share their experiences and enthusiasm for sport.
In his capacity as a Sporting Champion, GB Beach Volleyball star Chris Gregory is set to provide inspiration to youngsters at a Sportivate volleyball project being held at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre, one of the key initiatives to create a sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Chris will be visiting the project, which is supported by Suffolk Sport Partnership, and he hopes he can use the inspiring memories of London 2012 to help the young people at the project stay in sport one year on from the Olympic Games.
“I'm really looking forward to visiting this exciting Sportivate volleyball project run by Suffolk Volleyball Association,” said Chris Gregory, “the opportunity to support such community sports programmes is a real privilege for me. I'm hopeful that by using the Olympic and Paralympic legacy from London 2012 and through my experiences in competing at elite level, I can inspire all the young people in attendance to sustain their sports participation.”
There will be a free opportunity for all to meet Chris and hear about his experiences as a top sportsman on the Sunday the 29th of September from 1:30pm to 2pm in Studio 3 at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre. This will be followed by introductory volleyball sessions in the Main Hall which will then run weekly. Sessions for adults and teens (14+) will run from 2-3:30pm, with junior sessions following from 3:30-5pm. The volleyball sessions will cost £6 per adult / £3 per under-19. People wishing to play should aim to arrive at the Leisure Centre ten minutes before the start of the session and let the reception staff know that they are there for volleyball. This will allow time to make some introductions before we get playing!
For more information, please see www.suffolkvolleyball.org.uk/clubs/bury or contact Andrew Whitefield, who will be coaching: bury@suffolkvolleyball.org.uk / 07508 351875. For the latest updates, follow @SuffolkVball on Twitter or Like the Suffolk Volleyball Association Facebook Page.

The Suffolk Volleyball Association Development project is a great way for young people to try volleyball and have a quality sporting experience that will encourage them to stay involved.” Mr Rigarlsford continued: “Athletes of all abilities need the right equipment so that they can take up a sport, play and compete to their full potential. The net systems and balls will really help to get more local people taking up the sport.” Regarding the development of new coaches, he commented: “Great coaches play a vital role in bringing more people into volleyball and giving everyone a fun and fulfilling experience that will keep them coming back for more. This project is fantastic news for the Suffolk Volleyball Association and for the whole community.”
To launch the project and promote the new sessions that will be established, events will be held across the county during the summer as part of Join In UK.
